This past Friday night and Saturday until noon 16 of our men went on a deacons retreat. Taught by Dr. Joel Rainey, it was a wonderful weekend and we all grew a lot. Several of the men who attended were deacon candidates and we look forward to having them on board soon. The fellowship was priceless as well and we had a great time sitting up late in the lodge, drinking coffee and some of us eating ice cream.
Dr. Rainey did a Bible Study on what a deacon is and then we spent Saturday talking about culture shifts. Did you know that in 1920 the Southern Baptist Convention voted at their convention to condemn the use of pianos in church because they were used in bars? Isn’t it great that someone stepped up some time later and said we can use this for the glory of God as well. Sound like anything today?
Whats next on Sundays…
I will complete the book of Hebrews on Feb.7th. From here we will take the books of James, 1 and 2 Peter, 1 John,

The EC passed the 2010 budget last night and will now pass it on to the house [NWBC] for a vote at the end of January. Information will be handed out at Sunday’s service. Basically the budget has about a 5 % increase over last year.
We also voted to redo the parking lot in the spring and to proceed to get a loan for such upon approval of the church. In the fall the church will have a capital stewardship program to pay for the parking lot as well as upgrading the building. Plans will be forth coming.
We honored our secretaries for each having over 10 years at Northwest.
